"You know, sometimes when you want to build something, you have to destroy what's already there first
and it's going to be bigger!! better!!!!
soon, this island will be an empty lot, a blank canvas on which I will paint my perfect city!!!" ― Mr. Sunshine
Mr. Sunshine is the main antagonist of Pikuniku. He is initially depicted as a philanthropist, promising all the village folk free money in exchange for their "junk". He presents himself as an eager-to-please, benevolent inventor to the public. Even showing up to the villages in person to take selected residents on a "tour" to his corporate HQ.
Mr. Sunshine is rich enough to freely spread money across huge swaths of land with minimal repercussions, and the player can collect and use this money to purchase trinkets in the village shops.
History[]
Background[]
In the abandoned mines of the lake, a worm reveals that there was once an underground village in there. It's inhabitants were described as "pretty nice" and had a plan to build a metro station that would connect all the towns of the island. However, they ended up digging too close to a volcano that erupted and destroyed the entire city, and it was believed only damaged buildings and burnt corpses were left. The worm does not think anyone survived. However, given the inhabitant's resemblance to Mr. Sunshine, it could be possible that he is a survivor, possibly the only one.

The former villagers.
Pikuniku[]
In the start of the game, the player is immediately treated to a little commercial from Mr. Sunshine himself, in which he pledges to hand out cash to participating villages as a reward for letting his robots collect garbage. Instead, what these robots were actually meant to do was to routinely harvest crucial natural resources from the land, much to the detriment of each of the three main communities (Corn from the crop-growers, lumber from the tree-dwellers, and water from the worm family). This is troublesome but he doesn't seem to care as long as it benefits him.

An example of Sunshine's promotional billboards.
He's depicted on numerous billboards found throughout the game. Typically in nonthreatening, silly settings, paired with a positive or motivational message.
